However, widespread local bans affect large portions of the state. More than 30 Mississippi cities and counties ban kratom, including Tupelo (banned February 3, 2026), the City of Union (banned May 5, 2026), and Magee (banned July 2026). Tupelo enforcement was held for seven months while a retailer challenge ran in Lee County Circuit Court; after that suit was dismissed in August 2026, the police department gave retailers 48 hours notice and began enforcing at 10:00 a.m. on September 12, 2026, covering use, sale, distribution, and public display, with product found after enactment confiscated. Not every local ban has stuck: Jones County rescinded its ban in May 2025, choosing to rely on the statewide regulation instead.
