Strain guide · Types of kratom

Every strain, decoded.Vein, region and lot.

A kratom strain name comes from three things: the color of the leaf's center vein, which tracks when it was picked and how it was dried, the region where it grew, and sometimes a grade. Here's every strain in our lineup, with the lab numbers from the lot on the shelf.

Vein color

When the leaf was picked, and how it was dried.

Every strain is the same plant, Mitragyna speciosa. White, green and red track how mature the leaf was at harvest. Yellow and gold are finishing styles applied to that leaf.

What's in a name

Reading a strain name.

Most names stack the same three parts. Once you know them, a name like Green Hulu or Super Maeng Da tells you a lot before you open the pouch.

Part oneVein color

White, green, red, yellow or gold. Harvest stage and drying, explained above.

Part twoRegion

Where the trees grow, usually a district or river basin in Borneo or Sumatra.

Part threeGrade

Optional. Words like Maeng Da, Super or Wild describe how the leaf was selected.

Where the name points

Borneo

  • Kalimantan

The Indonesian part of Borneo and the largest kratom-growing region.

  • Hulu Kapuas

The upper Kapuas River basin in West Kalimantan.

  • Jongkong

A small district in West Kalimantan with seasonal, limited supply.

  • Ketapang

A lower-altitude coastal region of West Kalimantan.

  • Banjar

A historic port region of South Kalimantan.

  • Bali (trade name)

Named for the old export route, which carried Borneo leaf.

Sumatra

  • Aceh

The highland province at Sumatra’s northern tip.

How it was graded

Same species, every strain. Names describe the leaf and the place a name points to, not a record of each lot. Every pouch holds milled Mitragyna speciosa leaf, with no extracts and no additives.

Choosing a strain

Three ways to narrow it down.

  1. 01

    Start with an established name

Maeng Da and Bali are the two most established labels in the market, and Super Green is the most popular strain in our lineup.

  2. 02

Pick a vein, then a region

Decide on a vein color first, then narrow by region. A Hulu, a Jongkong and a Maeng Da of the same color come from different places.

  3. 03

    Read the lab results

Every lot has a public certificate. Look up the batch and note the mitragynine percent, the heavy metal values and the microbial results. Open the COA archive

Questions

Strain questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Send a question. A real person reads every message.

What does vein color mean?

It describes the color of the vein running down the center of the leaf, which tracks how mature the leaf was at harvest. Drying finishes the color: white leaf gets a short indoor dry, green a mix of indoor and outdoor drying, and red, which is fully mature, a longer dry that is often finished in the sun.

What are yellow and gold kratom?

They are finishing styles rather than separate trees. Yellow starts as white or green leaf given an extended, controlled sun dry. Gold starts as red leaf with a short ferment before drying.

Are different strains different plants?

No. Every strain is the same species, Mitragyna speciosa. Strain names combine vein color, growing region and sometimes a grade.

What do Maeng Da, Super and Wild mean?

They are grade names. Maeng Da is a selectively graded leaf. Super means only the larger, fully developed leaves from a harvest are kept at the mill. Wild means the leaf was hand harvested from wild, uncultivated rainforest trees.

Why are some strains between harvests?

When a lot sells out, the strain waits for the next harvest and its lab results. Select Notify me on the strain's product page to hear when it's back.

Do you sell extracts or 7-OH products?

No. Every product is whole, milled leaf. We don't sell extracts, enhanced products or 7-OH.

Where can I see a strain's lab results?

Every in-stock strain above shows its current lot. Select the batch number for the full certificate, or search any batch in the COA archive.

Found a strain to try?Every pouch has its certificate.

Indonesian leaf, hand-packed in the Hudson Valley, with a public lab report for every batch on the shelf.
