Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree in the coffee family, native to Southeast Asia. For generations, farmers and laborers across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia worked with its large, glossy leaves as part of daily life. Today those same leaves, dried and milled into powder, are what most people in the United States mean when they talk about kratom. This is a plain-language look at what the plant actually is, where it comes from, and how a leaf becomes the product on a shelf.

A relative of coffee
Kratom belongs to the Rubiaceae family, the same botanical family as coffee. In the wild it can grow into a substantial tree, and its leaves are large, dark green, and glossy. What makes the plant distinctive to botanists is its chemistry: the leaf contains dozens of naturally occurring compounds called alkaloids. The two most abundant and most studied are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Others, with names like paynantheine and speciogynine, are present in smaller amounts. The balance among these compounds shifts with the plant variety, where it grew, when it was picked, and how it was dried, which is why no two harvests are chemically identical.
Where it grows
Kratom thrives in humid, rainfall-heavy tropical lowlands, and the leaf reaching the U.S. market today comes overwhelmingly from Indonesia, with cultivation concentrated on Borneo (Kalimantan) and Sumatra. It grows in rich, well-drained soil with steady warmth and humidity. Because the plant is so tied to climate and soil, growers often name their leaf after its region of origin, and those regional names have become part of how the whole market is organized.
A long history of traditional use
Kratom has centuries of documented use in Southeast Asia. In Thailand it was known as krathom; in Malaysia as ketum. A Dutch botanist, Pieter Willem Korthals, gave the plant its scientific name in the nineteenth century, noting that the leaf stigmas reminded him of a bishop’s mitre. In its home regions the leaf was traditionally chewed fresh or brewed as a tea, and offering it to a guest was, in some communities, a gesture of hospitality much like serving coffee.
From leaf to powder
The path from tree to finished product is straightforward but matters a great deal for quality. Experienced harvesters hand-pick leaves, selecting by maturity and vein color. The leaves are washed and then dried, indoors, in sunlight, or a combination of both, and the drying method influences the final vein-color classification and the leaf’s alkaloid balance. Once dry, the leaves are milled into a fine powder and sifted to remove stem and vein material. From there the powder is packaged and shipped. Why testing matters
Because kratom is an agricultural product moving through a long supply chain, sourcing and testing are the difference between a clean product and a risky one. A 2018 salmonella outbreak tied to contaminated kratom, which the CDC linked to illnesses across many states, made that lesson permanent for the industry.
